I’m an IZEA Insider! Enter to Win a $25 Target Giftcard!

Posted on 19th November 2008 by admin in Uncategorized
A few weeks ago I applied to become an IZEA Insider, and I am happy to announce that I was selected earlier this week. I am both super excited, and also super stressed. What am I going to name my crew? How am I going to get crew members?

A lot of great bloggers and blogging friends also were selected to be Insiders too, so I know that we will all be competing to add members which makes me a little bit nervous. I don’t have a huge following. I plan to work hard and hopefully recruit some new blogging friends. Do you want to be on my crew? Do you have any words of encouragement for me? Any ideas on names for my crew? Please share them with me in the comments.

IZEA has promised a lot of great perks such as free tickets to IZEAFest and other swag for me to give away to Crew Members. I hope that you will consider joining me. I don’t have all the details yet, but I have a lot of fun ideas that I will be sharing with you soon. I hope that everyone who is local will join me so that we can work together to build a great team. If we get over 50 members, Ted Murphy himself will fly out to speak to our group. How exciting would that be?!

I’m already giving away a $25 Starbucks gift card, but I thought I’d give you some incentive to join and help me out. Holiday shopping is in full swing, so how about a $25 Target gift card? To be eligible to win, simply leave me a comment saying you’d like to join my crew, or with some suggestions for crew names. I have until Friday to get back with Ashley with a decision, so I’ll draw a winner next Thursday night. Thanks in advance for helping me out and for sharing your ideas!

Make a Wish

Posted on 18th November 2008 by admin in Uncategorized
When I was growing up, Sears was one of the places my family would shop for clothes. Now that I’m grown up, we shop more for electronics, tools, and kitchen appliances there. Some of those items can be a little pricey, and that’s why it’s good to shop at a store that has a good layaway plan. Sears Layaway works like typical store layaway programs which enable you to shop now and pay later. You can put as little as $15 down (or 20% of your purchase) and continue making payments until they are paid off. It’s that easy.

Dave and I have been talking about getting some home gym equipment for the house so that we can negate the $60/month fees we pay for our local gym. If we purchased a NordicTrack, we’d actually save money in the long run. We also have a lot of home improvement projects on the horizon, and some Craftman Tools would definitely come in handy. Sears also has a lot of Breast Cancer KitchenAid items as well as other apparel and accessories that support breast cancer charities. Those will definitely make great stocking stuffers and gifts for friends and family this holiday season.

What items are on your wishlist? Do you plan on putting any items on layaway this year?

The Little Red Cup Giveaway

Posted on 18th November 2008 by admin in 396

A few days ago I had my first White Chocolate Peppermint Mocha of the holiday season, and quite frankly, I haven’t looked back. I have had one everyday since then.

It’s no secret that I love Starbucks. I even love the little red cups they have during the holidays. Last year they had fun inspirational quotes and ideas printed on them. I was a little disappointed that they didn’t continue with that this year. I have been reading that other people have gotten upset when they tried to skip the red cups in favor of the regular white and green ones during the holidays. People take their Starbucks very seriously. Are you one of those people? If so, I’ve got the giveaway for you!

I am giving away a Starbucks Gold Card Membership and a $25 gift card so that you can start enjoying your favorite red cup holiday beverages. The Gold Card gets you 10% off most purchases in participating stores, surprise indulgences (like a treat on your birthday) and exciting offers and discounts. What Starbucks fan wouldn’t love to get in on that deal? I was itching to win a membership before they came out because I wasn’t sure how I felt about paying to receive a discount. If that’s how you feel, now is your chance.

Entering is easy:

*Leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite holiday drink (or even your favorite regular drink) at Starbucks is for one entry.
*Tweet about this contest to @laurie_pooh with a link to this post for five entries.
*Stumble this post for five more entries.
*Blog about this contest with a link to this post for ten entries.

A winner will be randomly selected on Sunday, November 30. This giveaway is limited to residents of the United States and Canada only. Please leave your real first name and a valid e-mail address so that I can contact you in the event you are the winner. If you do not answer the question (What is your favorite Starbucks drink), or tell me what you did to earn extra entries (along with your Twitter user name, StumbleUpon user name, URL of Blog Post), your comment will be deleted. Basically I want to avoid comments such as “give it to me,” “nice giveaway,” “I want it,” etc.

Thanks for stopping by! Hopefully you’ll be enjoying some free Starbucks soon!

Glasses on the Cheap

Posted on 18th November 2008 by admin in 400
I am still in desperate need of new eyeglasses and contacts. I am on my last pair of contacts, and my newest pair of glasses are from a prescription I had four or more years ago. I just need to make an appointment.

I have talked about Zenni Optical before because I heard about their promotion for $8 glasses. It’s a little hard to believe, but it’s absolutely true. Go check out their $8 lens & frame selection. There are quite a few styles, including both wire and plastic in a variety of colors to suit almost every taste. I’m not that picky when it comes to glasses because I rarely wear mine outside of the house. I could probably benefit from buying several so that I have one at home, one at the office, and one in my car. That way if I ever lose a contact, I’ll be able to see no matter where I am.

Several of my friends have already ordered from them. One said that he had a great experience, and would definitely recommend Zenni. The other has ordered several pairs on two different occasions because she liked them so much. Once I get my eyes checked I’ll be able to order too– and it will be cheaper than going through our insurance.

The media is also talking about Zenni. You may have heard about them on FOX News, or the popular The Howard Clark Show on the radio. Even the Chicago Tribune is talking about Zenni! How can they sell eyewear so cheap and inexpensively? Easy– they cut out the middleman and pass the savings onto you. That’s what I’m talking about!

Dear Santa

Posted on 17th November 2008 by admin in Uncategorized
How much do I love that Crate & Barrel has new holiday plates, mugs and a cake pedestal named after yours truly? A LOT! Aren’t they cute? And do you know that my kitchen and dining room are red? These would really be perfect. Perfect if I didn’t have another set of dishes that I have been dying to complete. I am over here having a convulsion. Let me tell you why.
Dave and I were married in 2004, and my wedding china is called Anna’s Artistry from Crate & Barrel. Last year it was discontinued before I was able to complete my set, and I was truly heartbroken. With the new house, I was never able to allocate money to finish it up. I had managed to get a serving plate and bowl before they took them away, but I am still in need of two of practically everything else (and 8 of a few other things). I spent part of tonight cleaning, and fixing up the dining room for the holidays. Looking at my china cabinet made me a little sad because of the incompleteness of my set. I check online periodically to see if it is ever at the outlet, and tonight… it was actually on the regular website! Not only is it back, but most pieces are over 50% off. The stuff wasn’t cheap to begin with, and while it is still kind of expensive, I am so happy to have a second chance to complete my set. I swear I think my heart skipped a beat. Also, they have free shipping right now.

So Santa (or Santa’s helpers out there), PLEASE… all I want for Christmas are some Crate & Barrel gift cards or pieces from my registry. I don’t know how long they will be available, but I am hoping that I will be able to get everything before they are gone. I’ve been an awfully good girl this year. Pretty please?

Win 52 Boxes of your favorite cereal!

Posted on 16th November 2008 by admin in Uncategorized

Do you like cereal? Dave and I are fans of Cap’n Crunch. How would you like to win a bathtub full of cereal from Ted Murphy? He says that equates to 52 boxes, and he should know since he has pictures of himself sitting in a tub full on his new blog, Ted.me. Don’t worry. You’re not going to win the actual cereal below. You get to choose your favorite. And because Ted is a charitable guy, he’s going to donate 52 boxes to a local food bank if he gets 500 unique comments to his blog post.

You can enter two times, once by writing a blog post and once by tweeting the phrase: “@tedmurphy is giving away a bathtub full of cereal. Help a family in need http://urlbrief.com/0910d7 - Please RT” You can also leave two comments on his blog in an effort to help him reach his 500 comments. If I win, I’d donate the cereal to the food bank in Frisco.

What is your favorite cereal? Go visit Ted’s Blog and let him know!

Saturday Night Celebration

Posted on 16th November 2008 by admin in Uncategorized

Last night we went out to Watters Creek to celebrate Nikki’s Birthday. We started off at Grimaldi’s for pizza and ended up at Cru for a few different “flights” of wine. I tried six different types of white wine from around the world and I discovered that I really like grapefruit and melon combinations. Dave had a couple of beers and made fun of us being silly as we insisted on taking pictures with the Christmas lights.

What flight are we on?

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Shopping Saturday

Posted on 15th November 2008 by admin in Uncategorized

I cannot tell you how glad I am that it is the weekend. As much fun as the 3-Day was, it is nice that it is over so that I can use my free time for other things besides training and fundraising. I went first thing this afternoon to my new nail salon for a mani and pedi. Then afterward I hit the mall. Nobody told me that the holiday shopping season is in full swing. I just got home and it was as crowded as you’d see it the day after Thanksgiving. Christmas decorations are everywhere, and even Santa is already posing with the local youngsters. That reminded me that I’d like Dave, Brownie and I to take a new family picture before we send our Christmas cards out.

Yesterday I spent part of the day shopping online at Old Navy. They are having a 30% off Friends and Family promotion, and naturally I feel like I have nothing to wear. I really need to weed through my clothes and get rid of some stuff. I haven’t done that since we moved. I got some kick ass deals, plus free shipping, plus 30% off. I also had some reward certificates that I used, so I got almost $300 worth of stuff for less than $150. My loot includes about six new winter sweaters in fun colors, two pairs of jeans, PJs, a Pea Coat, sports bra, flip flops, several silk tops and matching cardigans and some kitten toe heals, Not bad, and I even included a pair of pink Crocs (I know, I know) that I got for $10 thanks to finally getting my Piperlime issue resolved. They are good for gardening, and grocery shopping. I also hit New York and Co. yesterday after work and got some new sweaters and tops, one that I’ll be wearing to Nikki b-day party tonight.

I also got a coupon yesterday for a free tote bag from GAP that will earn me 10% on Fridays until the end of January. I was afraid they’d be out, but they acted like I was the first customer who had come in for it. I was a coupon shopping fool today. I got some more free stuff from Bath & Body Works, and a few pairs of those AWESOME soft socks they have. Then I hit Hallmark for wrapping paper and other Christmas goodies before going over to SEPHORA for some new holiday makeup.

Now I’m worn out and have been relaxing with the boys before I have to get ready to go out to Watters Creek in Allen tonight. We are trying a new New York based Coal Brick-Oven pizza joint called Grimaldi’s for Nikki’s birthday, then afterward we are hitting Crú for a few glasses of wine. I’ll post pics later, including more 3-Day ones when I uploaded them off my camera.

Happy Birthday, Nikki (and other ramblings)!

Posted on 13th November 2008 by admin in Uncategorized
Nikki turned 31 yesterday, and while she doesn’t think it’s a special birthday… I still think she’s special! We are going out this weekend to celebrate, so get ready!

As for me, my feet and blisters are starting to heal, and I can almost actually walk again without limping. Yay! I am glad tomorrow is Friday and that we will be able to take it easy and have a little off time. I have been stressed this week, and am looking forward to relaxing a little bit.

On our day off on Monday we went to Toni & Guy where I wanted to get my highlights updated. Yeah. So much for that. I am now a redhead against my will. I hope to get that corrected at some point, but it took over 4 hours the first time (thanks to an inexperienced colorist), and I paid over $150 when all was said and done. I think they need to throw in a free haircut.

We Made It!

Posted on 11th November 2008 by admin in Uncategorized

Hi everyone! I just wanted to let you know that Nikki and I successfully completed our first Breast Cancer 3-Day! It was a fabulous experience, and best of all we raised over $6000 that will be used for breast cancer research and will hopefully help make a cure possible in the near future!

We started off on Friday morning at Southfork Ranch in Parker, Texas. If you don’t know, that is where the television show Dallas was filmed. We began with thousands of other walkers and survivors. We made our way that morning through downtown Plano where shop owners stood outside and greeted us. We also passed an amazing Cheering Station on 15th Street near my workplace and up Alma and down Renner Road to a park in Richardson where we had lunch. We continued walking toward Carrollton where we saw David and Craig at another Cheering Station only a few miles from camp. That was all the motivation we needed to keep on going! We talked with new people along the way, and made a few stops too. We made it into camp as it was getting dark, and we pitched my very first tent.

Camping really wasn’t as bad as I thought, even though it was a chilly 40 degrees the first night. We had a late dinner, and also got foot massages and waved to David and Craig from the camp webcam before going to sleep in our cozy two person tent.

On the second day, we left camp and walked up Midway toward Plano near Prestonwood church and David’s job. We saw the guys, Brownie, and Nikki’s mom and children at another amazing cheering station. Throughout the route there is the opportunity to take vans and buses to the next pit stop or camp, but knowing that we had family and friends waiting for us kept us walking in their direction. The people there were so supportive, and constantly thanked us for walking. There was a big party at camp that night, with an American Idol style singing contest and even a dance party. I wrote post cards to donors and those who wrote me a letter that I received at camp. When we woke up the next morning, we packed our bags and took our tent down.

On the third day we walked from camp through Addison past Nikki’s workplace and toward my favorite part of town. We were really struggling to continue on, but walked side-by-side with a woman from the Austin area who is currently going through chemo. We talked to her about her life and her experience with cancer, her children, her family and her fears. It really made me realize why we were making the journey.

We continued walking at our own pace (it was a lot easier than the first few days where people seemed to race past us), though we had some pretty bad blisters and knee problems. We were determined to walk as much of it as we could. For the sake of time, we rode a few sweep vans a few miles to buy us some extra walking time before the pit stops closed. That bought us extra time to complete the majority of the route. If you don’t make it by the time they close, they bus you to lunch or to the very end. We were among the last walkers to come through the cheering station on this day, and were touched (i.e. cried) that people were still waiting to clap, cheer, and tell us thank-you. It was very emotional.

We also had to stop at the medical tent at lunch in order to get my blisters patched up and Nikki’s knee wrapped. We walked that afternoon into SMU hand and hand toward the holding area with hundreds of other walkers not long before closing ceremonies began. We felt incredibly accomplished and happy that we walked (what we estimate to be 50 of the 60 miles) together every step of the way. We cried for our loved ones lost, for others who are going through cancer now, and happy that we made it through the journey still standing.

Closing was also emotional as we remembered those who were lost, and as we celebrated those who are surviving breast cancer. We were all given white t-shirts, and thousands of us walked arm and arm into the campus. We cried, hugged and met up with our families for more hugs and tears.

We look forward to participating in the event in coming years, and thank everyone who supported us with their kind words and donations. It has been an amazing experience.
